I Am Not a Monster: Fatphobia and Misogyny in 'Monster House'

The kids then go to Reginald Skullinski, AKA Skull, a rumored expert on the supernatural. He tells them that what they’re dealing with is Domus Mactibillus, a rare breed of monster that spawns when a human soul possesses and merges with a man-made structure, and to defeat it, they have to go for the heart. This further arouses DJ’s suspicions about the house, and he calls Chowder to help him investigate.

Circus Life and Meeting Horace

Just then, the house moves again and taunts Chowder by playing his basketball that is marked with Jack-O-Lantern's face, which Chowder perceives that the house would start the real killing spree tonight. He stated that like mortal beings, they can only be killed by the destruction of its heart. The trio assumed that the house is inhabited by Mr. Nebbercracker's soul As the trio went home, DJ believes that the possession of the house started when the furnace inside the house was set alight, implying that the furnace was the house’s heart. So, they schemed a plan to make a dummy full of cold medicine, hoping that the drugs were enough to render the house sleeping. Unfortunately, Officer Landers and Officer Lister interfere, and upon seeing objects that they used to render the house asleep, they wrongfully arrest the kids.

This causes Constance’s anger to really shoot through the roof; she turns the trees flanking the house into hands/arms and feet/legs, pulls the house out of the earth and chases after DJ, Nebbercracker, Jenny, and Chowder. During the chase, Nebbercracker is forced to stop and rest, while Constance continues going after the kids. Despite having a happier life, Constance was again harassed by kids on Halloween, despite Nebbercracker's assurances that he would never let anyone hurt her, which led to her death. However, she turns against him when he attempts to blow her up to put her out of her misery. Constance hates DJ mainly because he is trying to stop her plan from eating all children on Halloween night and when he tells her husband to let her go. The complex relationship between Nebbercracker and Constance can be described as a mix of love, fear, and tragedy.

Feeling pity for the poor woman, Horace visited Constance in her cage and asked if she would like for him to take her away from the circus that has abused her, to which she happily agreed. At some point after all that, they then arrived at a plot of land that Horace had bought where he planned to build a new house. Despite its lowliness, Constance loved it and they both soon got to work on building their home together with Constance carrying her husband along and calling him "darling". Though little is known from her backstory, Constance was an immensely obese woman in life. Judging from the photos that Jenny, DJ and Chowder found in the house, it was shown that her extreme obesity was due to her love of food. At some point, she became an unwilling member of a circus freak show, where she was known as the "Giantess" and "The Lady as Big as a House", and in that very show, she was mocked and abused at by the audience, especially children.

Attack in the Morning

Constance Nebbercracker, formerly known as Constance the Giantess, was the main antagonist of Monster House. The battle between Chowder and Constance causes them both to fall down into the bed of the empty lake; the house falls apart in the process. Constance is constantly picked on by people, especially kids, because of her obesity. Furthermore, she doesn’t attempt to devour the cops that DJ, Jenny, and Chowder call to the scene until she is certain that they won’t be able to call for assistance. Constance hates Jenny because she helped DJ and chowder to stop her evil plan and was the one who cause herself to throw her, DJ and chowder out of the house. Constance hates chowder as much she hates DJ and Jenny, in fact the two of them mock each other back and forth throughout the movie.

Unaware that this is a trap, Bones approaches the kite, only to be pulled into the house by it. There, they discovered Nebbercracker’s old explosives and photographs depicting Nebbercracker when he was young alongside his wife Constance when she was alive. DJ stated that Zee and Bones had a conversation about Nebbercracker’s past life and assumed that he devoured Constance much to Jenny’s disgust. Just then, Chowder spotted the hanging lamp (the uvula) in the house’s hall, prompting them to shoot it. This, however, nearly caused the house to awaken as the house' main hall turned into a mouth-like cavern before spitting a large amount of green slime water.

Supporting characters

On Halloween, during their house's construction, some children began tormenting Constance. Provoked, she attempted to chase them off as Nebbercracker tries to stop her, only to be knocked out as she stumbled and fell into the unfinished basement with her body accidentally being coated in cement, suffocating her. Nebbercracker then finished the house's construction in Constance's memory, but her vengeful spirit soon merged with it. Over the years, Nebbercracker feigned aggression to protect innocent people from her.

Constance Nebbercracker/Synopsis

Jenny calls police officers Landers and Lister, but the house stays quiet when the officers arrive and they dismiss the report. After taking possession of the house, Constance's physical appearance is shaped like a head; the hair is made of black trapezoid roof tiles with the chimney placed on the right side where the heart is, although the location of the furnace is yet unknown. Her eyes are windows of different shapes, her left eye is square and her right eye is arch. The lower part of her face has the same wider roof and a platform where the door should be.

The house's furnace burns on its own, and with both the house and lawn under her control, she caused them to emit sad, groaning voices as the ambulance approaches to carry her husband away. As the medics put Mr. Nebbercracker's body on a stretcher, she possesses grass on the lawn and tries to prevent them from leaving albeit failed, while her spirit, from the house's window, glares on unsuspecting DJ and Chowder, making it crack as they leave. Aware with what she has become, Mr. Nebbercracker was forced to pretend to be a child hater to save their lives. He even confiscated their toys that ended up into his lawn so they never returned for sake of their safety. As he did this, Constance became appeased as she was no longer bothered, and presumed undergo a deep sleep.

The “monster house” in question is where the neighborhood crank Horace Nebbercracker (Steve Buscemi) lives. It turns out that the house is possessed by the spirit of his late wife, Constance (Kathleen Turner), who died on the site when the house’s foundation was being laid. Constance Nebbercracker is the main antagonist of the 2006 animated film "Monster House." She was a morbidly obese woman unwillingly working in a circus freakshow, who grew to hate children for mocking and taunting her.

He then approaches his house which becomes possessed again, but somewhat became gentle to him. By this point, DJ learned that all this time, the house was possessed by Constance's restless spirit. When Mr. Nebbercracker was immediately brought to the hospital, Constance immediately awakened from her years of slumber.

In the morning, DJ and Chowder spot an alluring red-haired girl, Jenny Bennett going around door to door selling Halloween candy. Seeing her heading towards the house, they run out to warn her; she merely thinks they’re crazy, but when she turns around, she sees the house coming alive. After observing the house eat a dog, DJ, Chowder, and the girl, named Jenny, realize the house only moves when its prey gets close. Deciding that the situation is starting to get serious, the three call the police. However, the police (Officer Landers and Officer Lister) don't believe them due to the house remaining inactive when adults or grown-ups are present.

Just then, the house moves again and taunts Chowder by playing his basketball that marked with Jack-O-Lantern's face, which Chowder perceives that the house would start the real killing spree tonight. Eventually, Mr. Nebbercracker rescued her from the circus and then married her. Though Constance was happy with her later life, her happiness proved short-lived after she fell to her death.

When Constance sees this, she proceeds to possess his kite within the basement, and uses it to lure Bones into the house. Unaware that this was a trap, Bones approaches the kite, only to have it coil around him and the house quickly devours him. The kids then resume the investigation where suddenly, the floor below them opened, sending them to the basement where Horace kept the confiscated toys from children. There, they also discovered what appeared to be Constance's carriage that DJ opened with a key that he found back when Horace's body was taken away by the paramedics.
